Hemorrhoid banding (also called ‘rubber band ligation’) is a surgical procedure whereby a rubber band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid to cut off the blood supply. Once the blood supply has been staunched, the hemorrhoid will shrink up and eventually fall off and be eliminated. A nearly painless procedure, hemorrhoid banding is usually performed in the doctor’s office. The hemorrhoid banding instrument is a special instrument that places a small rubber band over the lower part of the hemorrhoid. The hemorrhoid banding instrument pulls tissue into a double-sleeved cylinder, which allows the latex/rubber band to be placed around the tissue. This tight rubber band pinches off the blood flow to the hemorrhoid. Over time, the tissue below the band that isn’t getting a blood supply dies off , shrivels up and finally falls off (and is eliminated during a bowel movement) in about 5-7 days. The hemorrhoid banding instrument is widely used for hemorrhoids that protrude into the anal canal (prolapsed hemorrhoids).
