Hemorrhoid surgery is often a “last resort” for hemorrhoid sufferers, because this is one of those times when the cure is probably a lot worse than the poison – at least in the short run.

There are five types of hemorrhoid surgery. Three of these are used for external hemorrhoids: hemorrhoidectomy, laser coagulation or infrared photocoagulation. Those three and an additional two types of hemorrhoid surgery (injection sclerotherapy and rubber band ligation) are used for internal hemorrhoids.

A hemorrhoidectomy is simply the surgical removal of a hemorrhoid. Laser coagulation involves electric current which is applied to the hemorrhoid via an electrode probe – the hemorrhoid then undergoes a chemical reaction that stops blood flow to the hemorrhoid and allows the swollen tissue to shrink.

In infrared photocoagulation hemorrhoid surgery, an infrared light is used to coagulate the dilated vein, which also promotes tissue shrinkage. Injection sclerotherapy is the injection of a chemicals into the mucous membrane around the hemorrhoid, again causing closure of the vein and shrinking.

Rubber band ligation hemorrhoid surgery involves wrapping a small rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid, which cuts off the blood flow and causes the hemorrhoid to dry up and fall off. Self-care is obviously a more desirable alternative to hemorrhoid surgery, but when it cannot be avoided, these methods have been proven to be effective in the treatment of hemorrhoids.

Surgeons are now employing the use of a sophisticated laser in hemorrhoid treatment. This laser provides incredible, pinpoint accuracy for vaporizing or removing various types of hemorrhoids. Because the beam is so tiny, the surgeon can be very precise. Also, there is very little bleeding during the surgery and virtually none afterward, because the laser hemorrhoid treatment cauterizes as it works. Another benefit of this is that it promotes rapid healing and is usually much less painful during recovery than other surgical methods. Laser hemorrhoid treatment rarely requires a hospital stay, which saves the patient both time and money.
