Most important is to find the cause of hemorrhoids, because just treating hemorrhoids symptoms is pointless if they are just going to come back again. There are several suggested home remedies for relief of the pain and itching of hemorrhoids. The goal is to get relief from the itching and burning and also shrink the hemorrhoid.

Sitz baths are most commonly recommended. Soak in a hot shallow bath for 10 to 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day if possible.

Ice packs help reduce swelling.

Before we get to medicines that can be used, diet is a very important factor. It is beneficial to always have a high fiber-diet, but is even more important when hemorrhoids are apparent. High fiber-diet sources are whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Drinking plenty of non alcoholic liquids is essential.

There is now strong evidence that relaxation of the internal anal sphincter is mediated by the neurotransmitter nitric oxide. Various topical organic nitrate preparations have been used to induce internal-anal-sphincter relaxation in patients with chronic hemorrhoids. In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial involving 80 patients, Lund and Scholefield documented a healing rate of 68 percent in patients treated with 0.2 percent nitroglycerin (glyceryl trinitrate), as compared with 8 percent in the placebo group. The maximal resting anal pressure decreased and anodermal blood flow increased in the treatment group but not in the placebo group. Hemorrhoids recurred in 8 percent of the successfully treated patients, but all the fissures healed with a second course of treatment. Schouten et al. reported similar results in an uncontrolled series of 34 patients with chronic hemorrhoids treated with topical 1 percent isosorbide dinitrate.

One clinical problem with topical nitrate therapy is a substantial incidence of headache, particularly at higher drug concentrations. Fortunately, these headaches are often minor and transient. A second potential difficulty is the development of drug tolerance, a problem well documented with nitrate therapy for cardiovascular disease and now also reported during treatment for hemorrhoids.

Cleanse the entire rectal area with warm water after each bowel movement, and use a bulk fiber laxative to soften stools. This helps eliminate straining with bowel movements.

Sitting on donut-shaped cushions to relieve pressure. Again, this offers only temporary relief.

Bulk fiber supplements such as psyllium (Metamucil) or methylcellulose (Citrucel), can be taken daily to prevent recurrences of hemorrhoids.

An immediate-acting stool softener and laxative which will both promote elimination without straining, and stopping further aggravating your hemorrhoids.

The herb Horse chestnut has been used for centuries to provide relief of hemorroids. The alcoholate of the nut has anesthetic and anti-inflammatory properties providing relief from varicosis and hemorrhoids. Horse chestnut is still the desired treatment among Europeans when treating hemorrhoids.

By following all these suggestions, the pain, discomfort, and swelling of most symptomatic hemorrhoids should decrease in two to seven days, and the firm lump should recede within four to six weeks. If there is no noticeable changes using these techniques, then invasive procedures by a medical professional may be necessary.
