What Is A Hemorrhoid

A hemorrhoid is a tender, painful swelling in the rectum or anus consisting of distended veins that are often filled with blood clots (thromboses). A hemorrhoid can be internal (protruding through the anal sphincter) or external (under the skin outside the sphincter, around the anus). Bleeding may occur from straining at defecation or from the passage of hard stool. Hemorrhoids often occur during pregnancy or with chronic constipation (studies have shown that diets low in fiber contribute to the constipation that leads to hemorrhoids). Over 50 percent of Americans suffer from hemorrhoids - most will not require surgery, but there are several proven surgical methods. Common (and effective) non-surgical treatments for hemorrhoid symptoms include a high fiber diet (to keep stools soft), warm baths, topical ointments, herbal remedies, and/or plain aspirin.

Hemorrhoids, or piles, are distended or swollen veins of the rectum or anus that often contain blood clots (thromboses). Anywhere from 50 to 75 percent of American citizens suffer from hemorrhoids. They are usually extremely uncomfortable or downright painful. Internal hemorrhoids protrude through the anal sphincter; external hemorrhoids are beneath the skin outside the sphincter, around the anus. Hemorrhoids frequently occur with chronic constipation and also during pregnancy; studies have shown that low fiber diets can contribute to the constipation that can sometimes cause hemorrhoids. Mild bleeding is sometimes a result of straining or passing hard stools. There are many methods for diagnosing and treating the various types of hemorrhoids.

Thrombosed external hemorrhoids are caused by blood pooling in a distended vein and forming a clot, or thrombus, in the outer region of the anus. These particular hemorrhoids usually cause a great deal of pain, as well as some swelling and itching, but they don’t bleed. Treatment of thrombosed external hemorrhoids is either to drain the clot or the hemorrhoid, or to remove either the clot or the hemorrhoid altogether (hemorrhoidectomy). To the physician, during a visual or rectal exam, this kind of hemorrhoid appears as a swollen, skin-covered vein – purple, reddish or bluish. Upon manual examination, thrombosed external hemorrhoids can feel like soft fleshy lumps or hard, like ball bearings under the skin.

A: No. Surgery is usually a ‘last resort’, when more conservative treatments have failed.

Q: What kinds of hemorrhoid treatments are available?
A: There are many over-the-counter remedies, such as ointments, creams and suppositories. In the case of severe hemorrhoids, surgery may be indicated.
